Strathcona. Bring out her best.

“Each day is different.”

— Cara & Emily

We’re proud of the fact that our students revel in their spirit of citizenship. Our girls have a strong sense of social responsibility which is founded on their compassion for others.

Community

Strathcona students have always displayed a keen interest and strong participation in both the local and wider community. The school’s Christian commitment is the foundation of the involvement of girls in programs that reach out into the community, inspiring in each the spirit and willingness to become an active citizen and develop her sense of compassion.

As contributors, Strathcona students genuinely believe that they can make a difference … and they do. In Year 9, for instance, the girls become involved in Community Service with regular visits to aged care facilities and nursing homes in the local area. The girls also love taking up the challenge of raising money for various charities and for local and international humanitarian projects. Care of the environment is another important focus through the Horticulture Program.

Community Service is an extremely important part of the development of every Strathcona student. From practical community service to fundraising and goods collection, every Year Level conducts social service activities organised by the students. The cross-age activities such as Oxfam Walk Against Want and the 40-Hour Famine are organised through the Social Service Committee comprising girls in Years 11 and 12. The girls regularly raise in excess of $20,000 for a wide range of causes.

Further activities are organised by the senior Christian group, Kairos, and social justice activities are organised regularly.

A key thread throughout much of our curriculum is that of the democratic ideal. In such programs as Discovering Democracy at Year 9, students are encouraged to debate what it means to live in society as engaged and principled citizens. The values of respect, tolerance and social justice underpin all our social service activities.

Christian Education at Strathcona runs from Prep to Year 12 and has always guided the personal and spiritual development of our students. We conduct worship assemblies and chapel services and also offer Liberal Studies to all in Years 11 and 12. Speakers are invited to raise awareness of issues involving the community.

We believe that it is important to create an environment of caring and social responsibility—a community that recognises the needs of others.
