Strathcona Junior School Co-Curricular
Strathcona’s commitment to a solid music program provides all girls with an opportunity to develop the musician within. Music activities include all Year 2 learning a string instrument and playing in ensembles. In Year 4 all learn a brass instrument for a semester and participate in ensembles, the Mellor House String Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Brass Ensemble and Concert Band. There are choirs for Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6. These perform during concerts and soires, at whole School events and on occasions for community groups, as do solo musicians. Students involved in the co-curricular Speech and Drama Program also take part in concerts, soires and out of school Eisteddfods.
Outside of the classroom, students can take up instrumental music, jazz dancing, karate, rhythmic gymnastics, speech and drama, swimming and tennis.
In Years 5 to 8 students are involved in the Compass Program, a precursor to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Program, Future Problem Solving, Mathematics Olympiad, Mathematics Talent Search, Philosophy and Science Talent Search.
For Years 5 and 6 students there is an Interschool sporting program, softball, swimming, t-ball, cross-country, netball, hockey and athletics.
