Strathcona becomes a Sunskool
Tuesday 17th November 2009
Strathcona students and staff are committed to being environmentally friendly with many programs in place to reduce, reuse ad recycle wherever possible. It is important to the School to be environmentally responsible. Strategies and actions to achieve this happen through teaching and learning and environmental management of the School.
Rainwater tanks have been installed under the refurbished building to allow watering of the School Grounds (28,000 litres capacity rainwater harvesting for toilets and irrigation). Native plants, that require less water, are replacing plants that have suffered from drought conditions.
A 2kW Solar Grid has been installed on the rooftop of the building. Check the Sunskool website to see how much energy is being generated by the solar panels at Strathcona's Mellor House.
Strathcona Capital Grants
Friday 24th July 2009
Strathcona recognises the generosity of the Commonwealth Government in proactively encouraging all schools to apply for capital grants to improve facilities and stimulate the economy.
Stage 1 - National School Pride
Strathcona was been successful in receiving a grant in the first round of this program, which is available to all schools throughout Australia.
The funds have being used to install an underground rainwater tank under the senior campus sports field and resurface the sports field with a multi-sport artificial turf surface, enabling students to play a greater range of outdoor sports throughout the year.
Stage 2 - Aquatic & Fitness Centre Renovation
Under the Building the Education Revolution - P21 - Round 2, Strathcona has received grant assistance to renovate our multipurpose gymnasium and pool facility. The building was constructed in 1977 and is being totally refurbished for students sport and fitness needs. The facility will continue to be available for community groups’ use after the renovations are complete.
We plan to undertake the building works in stages;
Stage One
- August to December 2009
- Gymnasium refurbishment including new entry, flooring and spectator seating
- Expanded Fitness Centre on second floor overlooking gymnasium
Stage Two
- December 09 to February 2010.
- Pool refurbishment, including new change rooms, filtration system and entry.
